PROJECTS
Hampton House
HAMPTON, 2018
On a south facing site in Hampton, a key driver for this project was how to bring north light into new living spaces. The roof form of the existing Californian bungalow is extended through the site and then a small courtyard carved away. Living areas are now bathed in winter light, while timber battens exclude summer sun. The internal courtyard becomes an extension of the living space, allowing family life to spill outside when extra space is required.
Project size: 242 m2
(131 m2 existing house
+ 111 m2 new addition)
Site area: 491 m2
Completion Date: 2018
With a growing family, the number one value is space, and lots of it. This particular family had bought an old California bungalow and wanted to rebuild it for their children, knowing they would enjoy it for years to come.
The challenge here was the backyard faced south. A key driver for the project was how to bring north light into new living spaces while opening them to the backyard. The roof form of the existing Californian bungalow was extended through the site and then a small courtyard carved away. Living areas are now bathed in winter light, while timber battens exclude summer sun. The internal courtyard becomes an extension of the living space, allowing family life to spill outside when extra space is required.
